Magha Saptami
Puri: Lakhs of devotees have gathered in Chandrabhaga near Konark to take a holy dip on the occasion of ‘Magha Saptami’ today. This day is considered auspicious by the Hindus as it is believed to be the birthday of Sun God. A holy dip on this day is said to relieve people of all diseases and cleanse them of all their sins. As per tradition, devotees waited the whole night at Chandrabhaga waiting for the sun to emerge from the east. The place was full of devotees since Saturday evening for the observance of ‘Sashi brata’ which is the 6th day of the ‘Magha Masha’. Adequate arrangements were made by the administration including drinking water, electricity and erection of barricades. Makeshift lavatories were also built keeping in mind the huge number of devotees. As per the mythology, Shamba, son of Lord Krishna, was cured of leprosy after taking a dip in Chandrabhaga on the 7th day of Hindu month of Magha. Devotees regard the spot where Shamba meditated and worshipped the Sun God after bathing in Chandrabhaga for 12 years as sacred and also believe that the water has healing power.
